Coalitions and Collaborations

In creating multiracial coalitions and collaborations, there are many things to consider. Key among them are:

  • Include people and organizations for whom the issue is important and urgent - this often means significant resident participation.
  • Make sure all of the different perspectives about what to do and how to do it are included.
  • Address the power dynamics and keep the process of the group open and visible to all.
  • Discuss how to take best advantage of all of the skills, assets and relationships represented among the group, as organizational representatives and as individuals.
  • Address intergroup tensions through a white privilege lens AND a cultural conflict lens.
  • Provide opportunities and time for leaders from different communities to develop relationships and create time for same race/ethnicity caucus meetings within the context of a coalition/partnership.
